If one of your employees routinely offers unsolicited advice to coworkers, you may need to intervene. For example, one employee makes inappropriate comments about another’s appearance or personal relationships.
Generally, it is a good idea to let employees handle their own issues—with support if needed. However, if you notice a pattern that is affecting morale, it’s time for you to speak up. Say something like:
“I sometimes notice you making comments that come across as judgmental. I imagine your intent is to be helpful, and I think you may not be aware of how offensive your comments actually can be. Let me give you a few examples. When you said …, the effect was … I wanted to make you aware of how your words come across, because I believe your intentions are positive.”
